Outdoor Fire Pits & Fireplaces

Things to Consider when Choosing an Outdoor Fire Pit or Fireplace

A fire pit or fireplace can be a great addition to a back yard landscape.  It not only provides a warm and inviting ambiance in the space, but it provides the perfect place where family and friends can gather together, sit outside and socialize. Before deciding on what type of fire pit is right for you, keep these things in mind:

  1. Fire Pit vs. Fireplace

An outdoor fireplace or fire pit can provide a focal point within your landscape, but there are a couple things to consider when deciding which one will work best for you. A fireplace will provide heat from the front opening, which may limit the amount of people you can seat around it, while a fire pit is more open and will provide heat to more people because they can sit and enjoy it from all sides.  A fireplace can bring more of an indoor inspired feel, while an open fire pit can provide a feel of bringing the great outdoors to your own back yard.  Fire pits typically cost less to install, so budget is another thing to keep in mind when deciding between the two.

  1. Wood Burning vs. Gas

There are a few things to consider when choosing between a gas and a wood burning fire pit.  With a wood burning fire pit, you will need to make sure to have a supply of wood to burn if you want to use it, where as if you are hooked into your home’s natural gas line, you will have an on demand fuel source at all times.  A wood burning fire pit will burn hotter providing a better heat source than the gas option.  It also provides more of an outdoor campfire feel that many people enjoy.  Another consideration is the smoke that you can get from a wood burning fire pit.  If you don’t like the smell of smoke sticking to you, then a gas option may be your best bet.

  1. Location Of Your Fire Pit or Fireplace

When deciding on where to put your new fire pit or fireplace, take into account these couple suggestions.  First, make sure that it is in a safe proximity to your home, trees, mulch and any other things that may be a fire hazard.  Something else to recognize before choosing a place for your fire pit is the number of people and what furniture you plan to have around it and make sure you allow enough space around the perimeter to accommodate.
